Pile Foundation 1

Problem:

Pile foundation with a diameter of 0.406 m embedded in sand layer to a depth of 16 meters. Pile and soil data are given in the figure on the left. Pile head is assumed fixed against rotation but free to translate.

Find maximum horizontal load applied on the pile head for its limited magnitude of displacement of the pile head.

A chart generated by XLAT for this problem is shown in the figure below, where any horizontal load H is taken 100 kN. Displacement that occurs on the pile head is 0.0054 m (at joint 1, as shown in the figure). From load and displacement linear relationship, any load increases by 1 kN will produce pile head displacement of 0.054 mm.

Therefore, for a case where pile head displacement is limited to 5 mm, the allowed maximum load = 5/0.054 kN = 92.6 kN.
